You might want to consider the rock idea. I know it works well and in some cases it may be your only choice. Just remember a rock is heaver than water, and may not fall out if you tip. There is not a lot of flotation in a swamped canoe, a rock could take it to the bottom. I use a 5 gallon Sun Shower. I really scoffed when I saw one for the first time, but you have to love something that has multiple uses. I use it all the time for day trips when I'm paddling my tandem canoe solo. It's excellent for dousing a fire when an unexpected wind kicks up. It's always handy for putting out the little fires started by flying embers. It's good for rinsing dishes without getting soap in the lake. And, oh ya, you can even use it for a warm shower.
