You may get a couple of different correct answers and perhaps dozens of "brands" that folks swear by (especially with a gazillion responses!). Here is one answer: I take 3 pair of footwear, canoe/portage shoes, camp shoes, and swimming shoes. Canoe/Portage shoes -- These are the main shoes I wear when canoeing and portaging. I have used 6" high leather work boots, high top sneakers, and hiking boots. The main thing for me is ankle support for the portages. They also should be light enough to swim in in case of a capsize. Drying out/draining is a plus. This last year I went to a LL Bean Canoe shoe that have drainage holes in the side. These have been the best for me to date. I've heard of folks using Jungle Boots, too, though they are too heavy for me. Some folks are dry-footers but my feet always get wet and I find it dangerous trying to keep them dry (rock jumping to avoid water, etc.). Some others like rubber, waterproof boots, but I find they don't have enough ankle support for me. I wear polypro socks with these shoes (dry quickly). Camp shoes -- I take wool socks and sandals. I go to great pains to keep these dry. Once I reach camp, I dry my feet and change into these. Begin drying out your canoe shoes. Moccasins, or sneakers work well, too. Swimming Shoes -- For swimming! That granite can be sharp, plus you don't know if someone lost a lure where you are swimming. I call mine Aqua-Socks and bought them at K-Mart for $10. Other folks use similar things or sandals. Posted by Ken E. Brown on November 08, 1999 at 13:17 In reply to: Best Footwear in BWCA and Quetico? posted by Randy B on November 08, 1999 at 12:52 |
