Well for starter Cache Bay is a large span of water to cross I sugest that you cross in the early morning. I crossed it in 95 just after lunch and the wind was pretty rough. However if this is the case go up in the channel to see the Indian paintings, afterwards cross up in the channel. The maps don't show a portage there but there is a small lift over, saves alot of paddling in the wind. The portage on Silver Falls is mostly easy but keep in mind that it does fall about 30 meters.
The last time I was on the portage form Saganagons to the upper area on the falls it was really muddy, but flat.
There is a area on the first or second set of falls I can't remember which but the portage was kind of close to the falls. The rest of the portages aren't to difficult going up or down EXCEPT for Canyon Falls. A freind of mine broke his fishing pole on the portage because he didn't put it up. The portage is steep and rocky and really tough places if it is raining. The fishing is great though at the bottom of the falls. I've been up and down the portage a few times. I tell myself each time never again but it seems there I go again.
The current isn't bad at all. You do notice it but it's just like a head wind. Nothing like the current on the Maligne River.
I think it would be a good trip for you but you should allow at least half again as much time to go back up the chain of falls. Kawnipi Lake has alot to offer the Rose Island area is nice, and there is a nice campsite on the island up in the bay near Murdoch Lake also.
