We visited the Man Chain from Cache Bay this past July. Water was a bit high - the portage from Fran to the next lake up was wet: we paddled some of the east end of the portage path. The final portage into Other Man began with a nearly vertical wall - not long, but straight up and also wet. At the top of this wall was a line of granite that ended in a swamp. Much care was needed to keep from going hip deep.
Most of the portages were little more than aggravating.
Watch your navigation coming out - we had minor trouble finding the portage back into Saganagons coming out of Fran.
