We prefer island sites because:
1. fewer bugs - an island site is usually more exposed to the wind, keeping mosquitos away (for the most part). Wind also disperses cooking smells/odors.
2. usually better bank fishing, especially if an "arm" of the island extends to deeper water.
3. usually easier access to water from the campsite (landing the boats and drinking water).

A clean camp is the best way to avoid ursine visitors whether on mainland or island sites. Bears swim quite well and will visit an island site that attracts their noses.
