Meg: My first trip to Quetico, many years ago, was from Moose to Agnes, and I have many fond memories. Agnes is a beautiful lake, with beautiful scenery, geology, fishing, and wildlife. We found a lot of great campsites throughout, and yes, the best was on an island in the northeast arm. We spent several days there relaxing, exploring, and fishing a small gravel island a few hundred yards southeast of our camp. That tiny island was a smallmouth bass dream. The only bad experience was waking up on our last day to discover 20+ knot winds blowing from the south and kicking up whitecaps. It's a big lake, and we had to cover 15 miles that day against a headwind that stopped us dead in our tracks as soon as we lifted our paddles from the water before each stroke. I guess the lesson here is, don't underestimate the weather on a big lake. We made it, but we were wet and our arms were burning. Don't let that stop you, though. We shared our campsites with bald eagles, and the musical loon calls echoing across the bays are something I'll never forget. We also found abundant blueberries and blackbarries on the slopes to supplement our food supply. After a week without bathing, I found the pool below Louisa Falls, at the south end of Agnes a great natural jacuzzi, though it was a bit chilly. In conclusion, I'd recommend a trip into Agnes to anyone who hasn't been there. ...Tom Posted by Tom Swulius on January 07, 2000 at 03:13 In reply to: Route ideas posted by Meg on January 06, 2000 at 11:44 |
