Re: Walleye Tips

At that time of year the walleyes will be in the main lake basin seeking out cooler water. Figure on fishing for them early morning or evening/night. Look for a long gravel/rock point that slopes into the deepest water. They will come up along these areas to feed. Since crawlers have already been suggested, here is a good way to rig them. Take 3 hooks, like a size 6, tie them on your line about 2 inches apart. Even a regular knot will be ok. The distance apart will depend on the size of your crawlers. Hook the crawler through the dark part on the top hook, then a hook in the middle, and the tail on the bottom hook. This enables the crawler to freely wiggle around and any part that the walleye picks up, well,.....it's hooked! This should help with the guessing part of when to set the hook. Put a couple split shot, say size 3/0, about 12-18 inches above the top hook. Lower the rig down so the weights hit bottom, then reel up the approximate distance between the weights and the crawler. This way the crawler should be just ticking the bottom. Drift around likley areas until you find them. Oh, one other thing, before you go out don't forget to pray to the walleye Gods! ;-) Good Luck!
