Early morning, before the sun has a chance to warm up the waters and get the convection winds going.
The prevailing wind comes from the WSW; you can hide behind a number of islands if you're going into Knife in the BW. If you're crossing Cache bay into Quetico, you want to be first to the Ranger Station to beat the wind. If you chooe VCO, they start the tow boats at 7:30 - time enough to beat the wind.
