I just spent some time reading through old messages on this board. It seems to me there are some very good fishermen who contribute here. I hadn't heard of this page until someone posted a link on the CanoeCountry listserv. Anyway, I spend 16 days at the end of every May fishing the Quetico solo, and have been doing so for a few years. I like to have a specific fishing goal and this year it will be to catch a walleye over 10 pounds. Last year I tried to find the alleged crappies in the Man Chain and, as far as panfish are concerned, could only manage a couple tiny bluegills in Bell Lake. Some big perch and a few nice gills in Basswood the day before heading home, too. But I was pretty much thwarted in the crappie quest. As an aside, I used the Vexilar LC-10 graph last year to help and it was tough to find any weedy structure in those lakes. The shallow bays were muddy and I don't know where the crappies live. If any do, you have to give them credit with the bass, snakes, and lakers around. I'm going to wander about in the Agnes, Kawnipi, Kashipiwi area and see if the bigger lakes can produce bigger fish. I use 7 ft ML fast tip rods that I make from St. Croix and Loomis blanks. I also like 2/6 Fireline on these set ups with 4 pound sensithin leaders in clear water. My favorite walleye bait is the 3" Kalins twisty tail in "cotton candy" on an unpainted jighead. Anyway, I don't mind sharing learned information with you folks. I am looking for any nudges in the right direction on the big walleye. I don't really know their habits in the Kawnipi area and would appreciate any advice.
