Scott, I have some suggestions for you. Greg is right, the favorite, popular entry points for the Prairie portage entry points and Cache Bay are probably all filled. The outfitters and people who go every year get their permits as soon as they have an inkling about their trip. Here are some suggestions for the northern entry points, Beaverhouse, Nym, Lerome, and Pickerel. With these, you do not need a RABC permit. 1. Beaverhouse, Quetico, Jean, Sturgeon, Lonely, Walter, Elizabeth, Jesse, Oriana, Quetico. Good fishing and good trip schedule. 2. Nym, Batchewaung, Pickerel narrows, portage to Pine Portage Bay, Dore` Lake, Twin Lakes, Deux riviere, Sturgeon Lake (north arm), Russell Lake--Chatteron Falls. Stay there!!! Then go back the same way or be adventurous and go by way of north arm of Sturgeon to Halliday Lake, and Elizabeth Lake, Jesse etc. The portages on either side of Halliday are both about 1/2 mile, but aren't used real often. If it is wet, they are sloppy. The time we took it it had rained a lot and we called it the Hell of a day lake and the Ho Chi Minn Portage. Chatterton Falls is one of the most spectacular places in the Q. Since it is that, it is a popular destination. 3. Pickerel Lake, pickerel River, Bisk, Beg, Bud, Fern, River, Olifaunt, Sturgeon, Russell. Back to Chatterton again. You can go out through Dore' and Pine Portage. A shortcut for this route is to get a entry point at Stanton Bay. You can only use this if you use and outfitter. If you stay overnight at an outfitter, use some equipment, get driven there and pay them to take your car, you can use it. I like this entry for this trip. 4. Lerome, Bewag, Cole, Cirrus. Stay around there for 6 days. Lots of loops from there. And if you want to see another part of the Q--the west, get an entry point for Twin Falls, Black Robe Portage or Bottle portage or Brewers Falls. Take a tow from Crane Lake from Anderson Outfitters (that's who I use) and you check in at the 1st Nation Ranger Station. Go to Darky, Argo, Minn, and McAree. See Rebecca Falls. Its another great spot. Posted by Kim Young on April 06, 2000 at 21:56 In reply to: Re: some suggestions please... posted by Scott L. on April 06, 2000 at 14:03 |
