FYI, the Meany's secretly cut-out those portages when they were on portage crew for Quetico. Their efforts did significantly shorten the paddle distance at that end of the route, but they didn't tell the other racers about their little secret. They were tired of getting beat by the Americans in the race, kind of a tough pill to swallow no doubt, so they created their own advantage and it worked. Fair and square, eh?!
