Re: Falls Chain

Tom,
How old are the boys (how much can they carry)? Silver Falls can be a stinker if you're loaded heavy and don't have much help. Mind the granite if it's wet.

Silver Falls is the only really long portage. The next portage (across Boundary Point) is listed @ 75 rods - it's flat, but watch out for the slab of granite 1/2 way thru: very slippery when wet.

There's a nice campsite in Saganagons on an island just after the Boundary Point portage. There's a very small island on the south side of the campsite island to help you locate the campsite island. It's a little confusing after the portage. This island may be a good intermediate stop depending on what time of day you get to it.

The first of the falls portages is the longest of the next 3. Portage on the left. You may be able to cut it short and put in just after the falls itself if the water levels are appropriate - not too shallow, not too fast.

The next portage is short and relatively easy - portage on the left.

There's a great campsite on the western/southern shore of the 3rd falls. The portage is on the slab granite to you right as you approach the falls. Spend some time fishing the eddies at these falls - we had some good walleye fishing there 3 years ago. Everybody caught good fish except Rockhead. The smallmouth were in the faster water. Almost lost my hand to a northern that attacked a smallmouth I was releasing. Looked to be the biggest northern I'd ever seen, but then fear might have been a factor.

Can't be of any more help - we turned into McEwen just b4 the 4th falls, but I'd really like to finish the Falls Chain myself someday.
