Christine, can't help re' group, but if you're staying near or in Ely:
car top a canoe to any of the BWCAW lakes off the Echo Trail. A great day trip is North Hegman Lake - very vivid pictographs, and no use permit required (for day trips). The portage in is "long", but smooth and relatively easy. You might also ask at the resorts near Ely if there are others that might want to join you on day trips.
