Posted By Ryeman on July 23, 1999 at 15:02 204.146.164.221 Owen, I have taken my dog in and she does well. She is a chocolate lab and will be 8 when we go next year. She carries her own pack and first aid kit her vet made up for her. We both use permethein (SP?) an insecticide made for pets, that kills squeeters, ticks and other flies, I started to use it on my clothing after a vet recommend I use when hunting. (To see a testimonial go to canoecountry .com forum a thread date 6/7 on the subject, it is currently on page 11.) I keep her on leash on the busier portages and she remains under voice command on other portages. I don't tie her up at all when we are at camp, the first year she went with me she stayed in the tent most of the time. The bugs were so bad and we didn't have the premethein spray with us and I used deep woods with reluctant and to no avail. Last year she made the trip and only went in the tent when she was tired, on her own mind you. I believe next year's trip will be her last, a trip to the wilderness is hard on a dog. She does not bark or run off or chase after others or other animals although if you start to pet her she may want to get in your canoe with you:). It takes a special dog to bring with you into the BW one that will not infringe on your or OTHERS experience. I have had dogs in the past that I didn't think twice about leaving at home. I would also recommend that you get the lymes vaccination for your dog and have your vet do a complete physical, these I would do regardless. Hope this helps, and May Your Boots Dry Quickly! http://www.cjnetworks.com/~ryeman/bwcaw.htm
