If I remember correctly, you can take the shorter, but muddy " bottle" portage from Iron into Lac La Croix without violating any international rules or regulations. My only advice about Iron in August is that it is apt to be crowded, so plan on getting in early. In Lac La Croix, there is a marvelous campsite on an island directly across from Warrior Hill.
