Re: whistles and bears

In all the years that I've gone up Nord, theres been 3 times that I've had a Bear in camp. 2 times in the BWCAW and 1 on the Superior hiking trail.
I have an emergency whistle at home and when I fired it off, my dog got pretty upset and hid for a month. I'd guess that a bear would react the same way. The times that I've had bear incidents, banging pots and pans and yelling worked well. Better than the the time I tackled that mama bear. It gets hard to type with 3 fingers and only one eye, and that one eye is lazy now. Walking the trail or portages is tough with only one leg, I keep finding myself going in circles and not looking at where I'm going. All jesting aside, any loud foriegn noise should do the job.
Have a safe trip,
Lucky
