Hey Hey, Last October I went out for just over a week, up the Little Indian Sioux River, Leaving my wheels at Entry Pt. #9. I locked it and parked on level ground, seemingly secure, but of course it isn't a New truck , and it doesn't have any Valuable items such as stereo/cd, radio, or phone eq., etc. I have learned to expect the worst, through experience, so before arriving I inquired about any recent crimminal activities/vandalism in the area. The Ranger station in Cook gave the greenlight/ thumbs-up so I felt a bit reassured that It'd be in tact when I returned.
Even though the locals in most rural areas have a healthy respect for other peoples property, and love the Natural beauty around them, just look at the stream of beercans, and junk food wrappers along the roadside. Most of it may well come from seasonal visitors, but surely some of it comes from local litterbugs. These individuals are the types that can devolve into lower levels of vandalism & other criminal activities. Crimes can happen anywhere, and usually when you least expect it! Listen to your instincts!!! Ask around; just do it, put it on your checklist and ask, : It helps everyone to be reminded to be cautious and safe!!
When I returned, all seemed well with my vehicle. It was late, and starting to rain when I got back, after a long exhausting day of paddling out. I loaded up the boat, and gear, securing everything for the nights storm potential. I thought all would be well through the night, but I soon realised that my truck had been broken into; by VOLES!!!!!
I had left a grocery bag with a few apples in it, along with a few juice cans. Apparently with winter weather coming, the sunlight warmed vehicle looked like a great home with the smell of apples to tempt them to enter.
All night long I heard an occasional scurrying vole climbing around on everything, me included!!!
Next morning I spent a lot of time going through everything to evict any stowaways!!(be sure to check the air cleaner, etc.)
It just goes to show how even a little free food can attract animals, and cause a bit of an ordeal for all.
Don't set yourself up for trouble by overlooking little details. Thankfully it didn't draw a bear to dinner.
Happy trails!!!
