I too have often wished for better sight at night. But instead of trying out your method, why not get a qality pair of night vision binocs or telescopic sight from your local surplus or fish and game store. I'm not really all that eager to be hiking trail in the pm so the peripheral vision thing doesn't interest me as much as you but it might prove interesting to bait the shoreline and see what comes around. I'm thinking about sitting in my Kayak offshore and trying to catch a glimspe of coyotes, bears ect. Maybe even snap a few pics when they trigger my shoreline flash-camera rig.
