Re: stargazing

I'd agree that modern electronic navigation using GPS and other such tools are a neat way to go, but I wouldn't trust them with my life. There are too many stories about the electronics failing on people in the outback.

Don't go into the wilderness without a good set of maps and a reliable compass. Even then, there is the possibillity that iron formations can throw you off course, but at least your compass will work when you are away from other magnetic influences. The influence of magnetic anomalies is normally not too large, and if you can read the sun and the stars you will usually know where you are heading.

I look forward to reliable electronic equipment that I can count on to pinpoint my location. GPS can provide that when it works, but if your batteries die or your circuit boards get damp, you're lost if you don't have a backup.

Besides, navigating with map and compass is very rewarding.
