May - I personally like going in late May (the last week, and I have only been in the BWCA). I will add that the last few years we have been very lucky, in that we have gotten the first warm week (highs around 70 - lows around 45) and just before the black flies show up, we've also had less than average rain for that time of year. Obviously you can't always count on that but I find it better than dealing with the definite black fly season of June and less fishing action of July.
