I had a nice spring trip thru there in '99. My "navigator" got fouled up and we wound up going thru Cliff Lake from Upper Cone - it didn't seem to me that that was a very much used portage - lots of blowdowns - and this was before the storm! How was it this time? Winchell was a real bear with an East wind - the waves were huge. We caught the same trouble coming out of the West on Brule - we felt like it was "paddle or die". Of all the lakes in that area, we both agreed that Brule was the tastiest - we like to use the filter in each lake and sample.
