Learning whitewater canoeing from a book is like learning to drive a car from a book. The best route to go is starting on class 2 water, and getting your feet wet. I have friends that travel to Misourri frequently (Ozarks) which is close to Ks. There are numerous whitewater rivers that you can run sections of, based on the ratings.
Equipment is critical- plastic boats are the only way to go. Don't take your kevlar Sundowner for a whitewater ride!
