We have had odd-numbered crews twice lately and taken a kayak both times. Kayaks are difficult to portage and don't carry much, but they are sweet on the water and wonderful to cruise and fish from on base camp days. They are also fast and stable (once you get in) in wind and waves. When we're concerned about getting a campsite in popular areas we'll send the kayak ahead--it will beat any canoe in a race. Then the rest of the party can take their time paddling in. Kayaks tow easily also. I used an Old Town Loon 138 last trip into McIntyre in Quetico, from Basswood. Highly recommended if you don't have too many portages and your buddies don't mind carrying most of your gear!
