As you mentioned Goretex is the best if you're willing to dish out the cash. The only other decent quality, breathable waterproof material that I trust, is Omnitech by Columbia. I know you mentioned a bad experience w/ Columbia, but I would guess that ou tried a non breathable suit from them.
