I'm happy to report as of today the weather may have finally turned here in Minnesota. It was about 42 in Mpls, probably close to that up north too. Watch the weather, we need a good string of 40 degree or better days up north thru the last two weeks of March and into April at least. We had this two years ago and ice was out May 3. There was still ice on shore and some snow and nothing had really dried out, but... We've definitely had more snow and colder weather up north this year - 12th snowiest winter ever I guess. I'm betting if the 40's stay around in March and early April stays in the 50's we'll get that ice out by May
10. I think you guys going in on the 17yh and 19th will be in good shape, and I think I'll be right on the edge! Bringing a thermos is a great idea, and right on about no "wet feet club" that early. I wear lightweight poly the whole time and pack the expedition wear for nights. My bag is 20 degree, no problem with poly. Get a nice hat with ear flaps, some kind of poly, or one of those hoods like OR makes. Don't forget a pair of gloves. I've tried the neoprene and just can't hold onto the paddle! I've never tried the tall rubber boots but wished I'd had. Have a good ground tarp and a good lightweight tarp to cook (and huddle) under if it rains, which it could if it's a late spring. Make sure to call the U.S. Forest Service Ranger station close to where you're going in. I think they told me that every day at 1P the plane flies around the district and you should get a good ice condition report. One thing - hope there's no Rangers out there, but every time I called they were rather rude and patronizing. Oh well, I suppose they get thousands of calls from dorks like me...
