I have been going to BWCA and Quetico for over 15 years. This past year I took my first 3 man trip in a three man canoe. I am 53 years old and I took my 19 and 22 year old sons with me. We took a new light weight kevlar 3-man canoe.
I was quite impressed with this canoe. We were able to travel at a speed of 50% faster than a two man canoe. A three man trip will require four large packs. I was able to carry a large pack and the 3-man canoe and single portaging was doable.
In terms of fishing, three men can fish form the canoe but it is a bit crowded for the two men toward the back of the canoe. The advange in fishing would be fishing in a condition that requires one man to control the canoe. This would allow for two people to fish while the third controlled the canoe.
