Checking my memory we arrived in early May at Ely to find lake Shagawa still frozen, we had a party of six that base camped on an island in Shell Lake or Lynx Lake, the one fartherest north. It has a southern point that has a large flat area, fire grate is there. Open to cool breezes! This was a good moose area. One specific thing I remembered about that trip was a day excursion we took as a loop out to Heritage Lake. Caught some nice northern in Heritage. Portaged (+/- 280 rods) over to east "Loon Lake" bay. Nice spot to have lunch, sandy shores! Then we paddled Loon Lake around to Devil's Cascade, which is at the bottom of the falls. Portage up hill back to Lower Pauness Lake and then to base. That day trip pushed our limits, we were certain we had completed a good challenge.
