Re: Ice Out in the BWCA

Randy,
I much prefer a May trip, and my experience has been that the later the ice out the better. For a whole host of reasons. The smallmouth will probably be a little deeper, but everything else will be shallower. So instead of carrying 5 lbs of lead you can bring and extra pair of socks and mittens. I haven't decided yet what is the best foot gear, but this year I'm wearing a goretex-lined hiking boot with a waffle-stomper sole. I've never been able to keep my feet completely dry even in rubber boots(sweat), so I bring a few extra pairs of Ultimax socks and a pair of dry shoes for around camp. The shoes need a rubber sole. Do not bring a boot as your primary footgear that does not have a waffle-stomper sole. You will slip on a rock and break something.
We bring some small games and cards, a few books, and a Coleman stove with 2 gallons of gas. I want hot food and coffee. If it rains and is cold, starting a fire is nice, but I don't want to have to depend on it to eat something hot. I know a few examples of those who saved on weight by not having a stove, but were very cold and hungry after 3-4 days of steady rain. Even a 1 burner would get you through in a pinch, just no 4 course meals.
