Steve,
Saganagons has several nice camp sites. If you have an F-19 Fisher's Map you can locate these camp sites from my info. The best camp site is an island where Saganagons opens up into a large body of water. The island will be to your left. You will see about four camp sites on the right side also as you travel up the lake before it opens up. There is a sandy beach camp site on the right side of the lake just before you get to the Hunter Island portage to the Falls Chain. There is a camp site near the portage to Slate Lake that is close to three fishing holes. The camp site is not the most level site but you can catch LARGE smallmouth and nice size walleye (3# to5#) in front of and to the south of this camp site. I took a Hummingbird 200DX portable last year and found out that fish appear into this area about 9 PM. My brother and I where fishing this area around 8:30 and there were no fish on the 200DX. Around 9 PM fish began to appear on the 200DX to the point you could not count them all. We had a great time catching walleye. At about the same time two of our fellow campers were at another fishing hole (location not to be disclosed) and had similar sucssess. They had walleye on at the same time twice that evening. If you like to catch lake trout this is also a good area for them. Fish between this camp site and the island camp site about 40yd. t0 50yd. from the east side of the lake. The lake trout are in about 35' to 45' of water. Use 3/4 oz. spoons to catch these trout. I am not a jig fisherman. I only use three lures when I fish the Quetico. I use spoons for the lake trout and two colors of deep diver Rapala Shad Raps (#9-cw and #9 perch colored) for walleye. We troll for all our fish.
We plan on a portage into Lillypad Lake and Jasper Lake this year for a day trip. We have not been to these lakes before. Slate is a nice lake for smallmouth and small northern. The portage is very short and easy. Saganagons is a big lake and offers different places to travel over a period of a week. Trips around Hunter Island, to the Falls Chain and to the eastern end of the lake are all great trips.
I don't know if you use an outfitter for all your camping gear and food. We don't but we use an outfitter for a tow to Hook Island. This is the farthest point you can motor to get to the Park Ranger Station. I would suggest paying for a tow. It cost about $45 a person and saves you about a days paddel. There isn't a a customs in this area and you will need an RABC permit to legally enter Canada.
We always go to the Quetico the second week of July. I have not been there in Sept. So all my fishing info pertains to that time of the year. I will be there July 7 thru July 16 this summer and I will try to give a report on how our trip went. If you would like a name of an outfitter I would be glad to give you the name of the outfitter I have used the last 15 years. Hope this info helps and have a great time in Sept.
