Re: Bears - Quetico/BWCA

Tim,
Thanks for the info. Did you say that ax has a hardness that will keep its edge after getting pounded into the BW granite? I haven't been able to figure out how to give a full body effort when splitting wood, without having a rather dull ax to show for it. And the problem with that extra hard steel is that it would be a mother to file sharp again. Because one tool we do carry is a metal file. Need to sharpen the ax blade before beddy-bye just in case there are any uninvited guests.
Now for my suggestion to you: I Just got the Cabella's Camping Catalog and they have just what you are needing for piece of mind and a good nights sleep. It is called a Brush Cutter Machete, but in reality it is a Samari sword. Available in 15 or 20 inch lengths. They even show a picture of the dude whipping it out, but it ain't no bush that is needing to be whacked. It is either some wild, hungry critter, or a wild eyed-camper robbing bushwhacker. Page 32. The dude looks positively confident that he'll walk away and leave a not-soon-to-be-forgotten impression. And it straps nicely on a pack. If it came with its own pillow sheath, I'd be sold.
