a great deal of good... in wet conditions, water is eventually going to get between the floor of the tent and whatever's beneath it. it that turns out to be your groundcloth, then your going to get wet. on the other hand, if you have the groundsheet inside the tent, the floor of the tent can get as wet as it likes, since there's another layer of waterproof cloth between you and the wetness, which is what really matters. sure, the bottom of the tent tends to get rather dirty (especially after sitting in the rain-sodden dirt for four days), but that's a small price for staying dry.
