FOREST SERVICE BANS ALL CAMPFIRES IN BWCAW
In response to abnormally dry weather and extreme fire risk in the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota, the Superior National Forest will ban campfires in all areas of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) effective July 12, 2001.  No campfires will be allowed at any time until significant rainfall.

The ban applies to campfires, and charcoal and wood-burning campstoves in all areas of the BWCAW at all times of the day.  Their use will also be prohibited in all areas of the forest outside the wilderness, with the exception of specific developed Forest Service campgrounds.  Propane and gas campstoves will be allowed in all areas of the Forest, including the BWCAW, at all times.

In addition, the Kekekabic Trail (east of Disappointment Lake and the Border Route Trail) and associated connector trails will be closed to the public, with the exception of the Caribou Rock Trail from the trailhead to Moss Lake Campsite.  This will affect entry points 56, 59, 74 beyond Disappointment Lake, and entry points 81, 83, and 82 beyond the BWCAW boundary.  Sections of these long-distance trails are located more than a quarter mile from a large body of water and pose a risk for hikers who cannot quickly get to them if there is a fire.

These restrictions take effect at midnight, July 12, 2001, and will continue until a significant rainfall.  A list of exempted campgrounds will be posted on the Superior National Forest website: www.snf.superiorbroadband.com.

Out of curiosity, I tried the phone number on the bottom of the page for Ontario Fire Info but it "could not be reached from my area" whatever that means.
