I live in Marion Ohio and have gone to BWCA on 15 different occasions. I enjoy the wilderness experience and enjoy catching smallmouth bass.
My alternate to BWCA is the Sylvania Wilderness area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We go thru Fort Wayne on our way to Sylvania and I would estimate that you could drive from Fort Wayne to Sylvania in under 10 hours. Sylvania is about a 25 square mile area on the Michigan / Wisconsin boarder near Watersmeet Mi.
One lake allows motor boats and the remaining 9 lakes are canoe only. The lakes are crystal clear and the fishing is all catch and release with artificial lures only. The camping facilites are similar to BWCA conditions.
I find it to be a very good four day outing. The reservation system does not make for easy canoe tripping, but it is easy to base camp and take one or two, day trips and cover a large portion of the area.
