We were headed up the Gunflint Trail early July seventh and were hitting dense pockets of fog!!! We were traveling about 10 mph and out of the fog, coming right at us is a large bull moose. He stopped and we stopped not more than 10 feet apart. He than turned and started running down the middle of the Gunflint. We followed him for about a quarter of a mile until he finally turned into the bush. We arrived at our outfitters around 6:30 AM and caught some sleep. The outfitter woke us up and we got our stuff loaded into the tow boats and headed out around 7:30 AM. The fog was gone, the sun was shinning and the wind was calm. It was a great start so we thought. As we head down the channel that leads to Sag Lake it began to get a little foggy. By the time we reached Sag lake it was a total white out. You could see only about 20 feet on each side of the tow boat. The kids running the boat have it wide open and we are flying thru the fog. I try to get them to slow down, then all of a sudden trees and rocks loom out of the fog and we swerve and slow down. We follow the shore line until it ends and we continue into the fog. The sun is shinning but we still can't see where we are going. We begin to realize we are lost in the fog. We wandered around in the fog coming across more islands until the kids running the boats are totally confused as to where we are at on Sag!!!! I finally ask them in what direction is Hook Island from where we started? They said Hook Island is south west from where we started. I told them that the sun is on my right shoulder and we are headed south east. Completely the wrong direction. We turn around and head in a more south westerly direction. In about 15 min. later we we clear the fog and low and behold Hook Island is visiable in the distance. On the the portage at Silver Falls we passed two groups and ask if they had fog this morning. One group experienced the fog when they got up and waited for it to clear before they headed out on the lake. I was just wondering if any body else experienced being " Lost In The Fog" on July 7th 2001.
