Re: Outside the Parks

Wood Caribou Provincial Park is where you should go. Believe me, we were there last June for the same reasons you talk about, solitude. Talk to Albert at Goldseekers Outfitters in Red Lake, good place to outfit from. He can arrange fly-ins or paddle in fly-outs, shuttles, etc. We went 9 days and the weather was great first week of June. Red Lake area is a LOT drier than Quetico/BWCA. Saw 6 canoes all week, and only on the one real "milk run" route at the very end of the week, if you can even call it that. Lots of birdlife, great lake trout fishing, didn't see much wildlife, they are NOT used to seeing people, so if you are noisy on the portages or in camp they won't be seen. Search for WCPP on the web, find the phone # for the park office and talk to Claire. Go, you'll love it up there. A 5 day trip is fine, the portages are short but rugged in most places. You may want to paddle in and fly out, that's what we are going to do next spring. We're going back ASAP!

PS Firewood out the wazoo also!
