James, If you go early enough in June AND if the water-level holds up, the Lower Cache River flowing out of Cache Lake into Kawnipi Lake offers a lot. Of course that'll mean some upstream paddling on Baptism Creek and then the fun of a nasty two mile portage into Cache Lake first... but we had a great trip there in the Spring of 1996 (late thaw, high water). Paddling the Lower Cache River down to Kawnipi is about a twenty mile run. There are excellent wildlife sighting prospects on that route and decent rapids to be challenged, if you are so inclined. The area is truly remote, however, so DO exercise great care in the white water. We chose Royalex canoe construction over Kevlar with this in mind. Also, if you head into this area, DON'T make the mistake we did. There's an "Upper" Cache River bisecting the 2 mile portage into Cache Lake from Trousers Lake. Depending on water level, it may look tempting to run this stream all the way into Cache Lake. Having tried that sorry route, I strongly advise "crossing" the Upper Cache and sticking to the muddy trail! I promise Cache Lake will deliver the solitude you seek. Be sure to pack your Lake Trout tackle and your camera. Jimbo Posted by Jimbo on March 01, 2002 at 19:08 |
