Re: Lake Trout all summer

Shane,
I fish Knife Lake every year. Our group has also made the trek to Kekekabec. There is a spot where we go that is very nice for all the reasons I go to the BWCA. Since you're going in June I can tell you where the fishing for Lakers is good. Find on your map Thunder Point. There is deep water there as well as in the narrows into the South Arm of Knife. You will find them there. If the water is still very cold, or the Mayfly hatch is on, you may find them in 8-10 feet of water. Otherwise troll across the face of Thunder and into the narrows and you will catch them. I can't add much to what has already been said as to technique, but if you are into July or August you need to bring some big lead to get to 50-60 feet. We sometimes use portage anchors and jig off Thunder, but it is big water and can get very rough out there.
There are Walleyes and Smallies in the shallower waters, but don't bother about Northerns on Knife, because I haven't had too many in my many weeks of fishing there.(Which is fine by me...they are more of a hassle than they are worth sometimes.)
You do not need a fish finder, but we usually have one along with us to check for depth and structure. And it is nice to know they are down there even when they aren't biting.
One more thing. If you catch fish in June you will probably find crawfish in their guts. A few years ago EVERY fish we caught was loaded with crawfish. We bring some of those crawfish baits/sinkers for fishing the flats when they are in season. They aren't as effective as a slip-bobber and worm/leach, but it is fun.
