I will be getting a new filter this year as well. My PUR filter broke last trip, and it can't be more than 6-7 years old. That is only about 2 months of fairly heavy use. The sponge prefilter is a must, unless you want to pump water from offshore. I still drink water from out in the lake when I'm away from camp, but I guess I'm lazy and a risk taker.
