Re: Taking girls 9 to 14 on first trip

I do not know if you still need advice and if you are going to read this late reply. First of all congratulations for you and girls. This is a special place and you will have a special time. I went to Quetico first time last year with my 6 year old son. It was magical. We did a nice route 53 miles on water and about 3 miles on the ground over 16 portages during ten days. This might be to much for your group. The larger the group with children the more chances of slowing down. Try to camp on islands or peninsulas. For two reasons: bears and mosquitos. Of course if you have stormy weather coming up you do not want to be camping in a open, exposed campsite. Before you set your camp investigate it. Watch out mainly for dead or unstable trees leaning on the other trees. they do noy call them "widow makers" for no reason. One more thing a good water filter and extensive first aid kit is a must so is peronal water bottles for children. Keep them warm and hydrated all the time.
As far as outfiters I can only recomend one: Piragis Outfitters in Ely. Web site www.piragis.com They are premier outfitters with tons of first class equipment and advice. Have a quiet and blessed time on the water.
