Re: Simple Sailing

I have done it with a nice straight piece of driftwood and the rain fly from the tent. Fold it into a triangle, tie two ends to the pole. The front person wedges it between the seat and a heavy back just behind them, then hold it upright. The rear person loops a cord attached to the back edge around the rear seat support and then around the rear thwart then ties it to their ankle. Then the rear person can adjust the sail with their leg and the thwart/seat support loop takes most of the tension off your foot. The rear person can still paddle and stear. One word of caution though, be careful if it is real windy, or if you are not an experienced sailor. This sail will catch alot of wind and can generate a lot of force, and the rear person is basically tied to the canoe. Start with a small triangle till you get the hang of it.
