Re: A child's first trip

Steve & Mark,

My teenagers were once young ones in the Park like your's will be. You received some splendid advice in the postings I've read. I would add just a few thoughts:

1. I recommend picking up a book called "Canoe Country Wildlife: A Field Guide to the North Woods" written by Mark Stensaas. Have the book handy and your children can read about wildlife they spot in the Park. It only costs about $15 and it's fun to read.

2. Have your Outfitter or Planner select a route that includes proximity to some sand beaches. There are many but sometimes they're hard to find. Kids have an easier/safer time in the sand than on slippery rock. Also, be sure to pack sandals or water shoes for the kids. If you let us know what route you select, I'm sure contributors to this board can point out known beaches.

3. Bring plenty of bug dope BUT watch out for high concentrations of DEET in what you use. Some youngsters have awful reactions to the stuff. Ask your doctor.

4. Check their hair for ticks everyday.

5. Other responders mentioned this but it's worth repeating given my experience with my own kids: involve the kids in planning as much as possible (ie. what to bring, what to do each day, how much fishing, how much swimming, etc.). This year my "teenagers" are pumped up about "bushwhacking" into a small unnamed lake off the beaten track. Lucky me.

6. Finally, you'll want to be careful in big water susceptible to big wind & high waves. Best bet is to stay away from big water during the afternoon gusty period. However, you might consider some form of "stabilizer" or pontoon system to give you canoe a little extra buoyancy. Some outfitters offer them. I used a Spring Creek model on my 17 footer with my youngest son in the bow one year & I'm glad I did! Still, simply exercise good care & you don't really need such an accessory.

I'm sure you'll get loads of other advice. These are just a few things that came to mind. Have a wonderful trip!
