A while ago I asked for advice on whether Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC) permits were required at Pairie Portage and got some mixed advice. So I just wanted to clarify for anybody else going through there for the first time since they closed the custom station (in 1998?) that yes they are required and no you can't get them at the ranger station. The preferred method is by mail several months ahead, but this week they told me they would process ours in 48 hours and fax the permits (it remains to be seen if this actually works). Also, if you don't have the passport or birth certificate (or some other proof of citizenship) which is required, the custom office told us that their agents are much less picky about documentation if you show up in person at a Port of Entry (i.e Fort Frances or elsewhere) to get the RABC permit. (Reportedly, a drivers lisence alone or a lisence plus a social security card are likely to be accepted.) Posted by lah on May 30, 2002 at 14:28 |
