mountain lion/cougar/bobcat

Hey, I was portaging once on a seldom used trail, over a rugged rocky hilly region adjacent to a wide riverbottom/valley, and though I had rather limited vision due to a large canoe over my head, I DO RECALL the DISTINCT SMELL of CAT URINE/(Litter-box smell for those vaguely familiar with domestic cats)!!!!
I didn't have time to wander around looking for scat or pug marks, or other sign, but I would've bet a paycheck on the fact that some kind of wild cat recently wandered by, or even frequented the area!

I'm wondering if others have encountered any significant evidence of the likely presence of wild cats(presumably large cats; bobcat, or cougar,?)
This was on a fairly breezy, but calming , sunny ,late afternoon , in Late September of 2000., in the Southwest region of BWCA.
