My group used Stanton Bay as our exit point for a one-way trip last July. At that time you had to use an outfitter as non-resident overnight parking was not permitted. Our outfitter picked us up and as I recall the drive out wasn't too rough and took about half an hour (although he was driving somewhat faster than I would have been driving my personal vehicle). The portage going in would be downhill, and the path is planked over any rough spots. Not a bad walk in comparison to some others. Sorry I can't help on the distance to French.
