We just returned from a trip in SW Quetico & the swarms & hordes of flies were horrible. Fortunately, the fishing was great!! We observed that they were worst on the water & near water, which, of course, is where most of us want to be. Two things seem to help. 1) Some experience relief with DEET (mosquito repellent). If that doesn't work, try #2 2)Quietly smear a little dishsoap into your buddies lifejacket. He will enjoy them so much more than you will. It will be especially funny when it rains & the suds flow. Been there, done that.
