The first couple weeks after iceout (normally late-April or early-May) is usually a safe bet. But that might put a damper on the fishing, and it is tricky to plan a trip at the last minute based on iceout.

If you love fishing (and solitude), but hate blackflies and other bugs, September is a great month.
