foam diagram

The foam serves as a separator more than padding. It's not like I'm shipping it. The top is intact and probably a waste of some space. I stick the flat stuff and pens up there and maybe the thickness holds things tight. All sides have at least 2 squares of foam except for space 1 which touches the case.

The proportions aren't great but you'll get the idea.

1 - (~4x11 squares with film cardboard next to zoom) Filters, pain meds, minimag, compass batteries bubble level... whatever.
2 - Body and zoom
3 - 2 lenses w/caps (one square foam below)
4 - wide lens and 2 rolls o film below.
5 - Body and short lens - keys velcroed to bottom.
6 - (2x5)Misc. Wallet - compass or lens juice

2+5 don't have foam below. That's where I stick 13 rolls o film in the canisters. They are taped together in groups of 4 or 5.

The only drawback is if you try to pick it up without closing the top! I do that at least once a trip.
