Maps notwithstanding, if you are unfamiliar with the area it looks a whole lot different from a canoe than it does on a map spread on your kitchen table.

I use the Terraserver program that is free on the net to get my coordinates to add to my GPS. I still primarily use maps and rely on the GPS as back-up. The Garmin E-Trex weighs next to nothing so its not a weight issue.
