Northeast Quetico - September 9-14 2000

One evening
I found walleyes on what is, for me, not a great walleye lake. After
releasing the second one I took a good look around to be sure to
note exactly where they were. I noticed the start of a rainbow even
though it wasn't raining. By
time I raised the camera to my eye, it had became a full end-to-end
rainbow and didn't come close to fitting in the viewfinder. My first
instinct was to grab the paddle and back up a bit. Proof that the
first thing that comes to mind is not always the right solution.
I did eventually get a little wet but it was well worth it. Paddled
back to camp by moonlight on water smooth as glass. Totally peaceful
until that darn beaver and I crossed paths again.
I
was happy to see most campsites were in pretty good shape. I did
find a dollar for the second year in a row. Must be my reward for
burying all the queen's TP. Now if she really wanted to impress
someone she should start using hundreds.
Pickerel
kept me for an extra night again on my way out. I didn't mind too
much. The great thing about this time of year is the sun doesn't
rise until 6:30. Getting an early start to beat the worst of the
wind really isn't all that hard. I have to hand it to those of you
who have already struck camp and are well on your way at or even
before first light. That's pretty impressive. I guess I'm not the
only one with a healthy respect for Pickerel.
