Well, Bullfrog nailed it.  I guess it wasn't much of a tip.    Maybe I should quit BS'n since not only am I not so good at it, but also that I've recently been accused of such - in a thread BTW to which I was trying to be helpful.

Old_Salt, I've spent a couple of nights in Grand Marias, one night each coming and going on my first BW trip to the end of the Gunflint trail.  That was our honeymoon trip and frankly I wasn't able to slip away long enough from the motel to wet a line.  

Now down to business; if I were you I'd take whatever opportunity is given to try for some brook trout up along the Gunflint trail.  For example, the South Brule river intersects the trial and then parallels a county road for several miles.  From memory, that river is shallow enough to walk down the middle and just wide enough to allow casting.  Walk upstream and cast 1/32 oz Panther Martins and Rooster Tails under the tag elders, into the holes and up against sunken logs.  As fast as you can crank in those spinners, the trout will nail them.  Walk downstream and float crawlers with the current into the holes and bends.  Keep your line straight and watch for the subtle drift of it to the side. If the water in the Brule is to warm, find one with cooler water. If its too cold to comfortably wade in, its just right for brookies.  Don't count on the locals to give you any accurate information. IMO, no secret is better kept than the location of a limit of trout waiting to happen.  Hey, why don't I just meet with you up there?  Ark'man will probably still be in Lutsen and we can shag him out as well.  Need some inspiration; read Sig's "Birthday on the Manitou."

I'm looking for suggestions about drive-to lakes in the Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail area that would be good fishing that one could put a canoe in for a day or so in mid-summer. If you have a hot tip and don't want to post, please IM me. Thanks.
